LS8-sc neo

LS8-e neo – The Standard Class Racer goes Electric

Right after its first roll-out, the LS8 has become a favored aircraft with fantastic handling qualities. With the neo-version, its handling could further be optimized, but, first and foremost, the aircraft’s performance has significantly increased. How does that work? Even though the maximum take-off weight including ballast may add up to 525 kg, at that point most standard class sailplanes are no longer nice to fly. Till now! Our LS8 neo keeps its excellent maneuverability even when fully loaded. In thermals together with much lighter competitors it climbs effortlessly – only to demonstrate its full potential during the glide. Consequently it was a reasonable step to combine our LS8-sc neo with the well proven FES system.

The Front Electric Sustainer System – FES

An Ideal Combination

The LS8-e with its well proven FES propulsion by LZ Design is a conjunction of two worlds. On the one hand the LS8, which is in its neo version undoubtedly one of the best models you may fly in the standard class. On the other hand a safe, powerful electric drive which with its easy handling and lickety-split availability is a reliable partner in any flight condition.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

LZ Design successfully managed to transfer a simple and brilliant functional principle, which has already been used for model aircraft during several decades, to sailplanes. To activate the propulsion system in flight, you simply flip the main switch and revolve the speed regulator on the control panel. The powerful 22kW electric motor will fire up immediately to deliver a climb of up to 2m/s if desired. Its propeller blades are unfolded by centrifugal force.

To stop the engine, you just have to turn back the regulator. The system turns down the speed control and automatically folds back the propeller blades horizontally. The air stream safely replaces them along the fuselage nose. The process ends when turning off the main switch.

Maximum Safety

In order to guarantee a safe handling especially during club use, the LS8-e neo‘s system provides three safety levels, which prevent an accidental activation of the motor on the ground.

The first level is a contact bridge, which has to be inserted to activate the batteries in the rear fuselage. It has to be mounted on the batteries before flying, and then a lid closes the cut-out.

The second level is a safety switch inside the LS8’s cockpit. An electronic circuit prohibits maloperation. Starting the motor is impossible as long as the canopy is not properly closed.

A master switch in the instrument panel is the final stage. The pilot has to deliberately turn it on to activate the propulsion system. A relief cap prevents an accidental activation while the pilot enters the cockpit or prepares it for flight.

The batteries which weigh 16 kg each are stored in especially developed stainless steel transport boxes. They may safely be transported, recharged and stored in those boxes.

SIMPLE BATTERY MANAGEMENT

The purchased package ensures a very easy battery- and motor handling. Two included charging units guarantee a secure battery recharging process. Via a data cable you may always analyze and check your batteries.

Previous to a longer storage period the batteries can be discharged to the required voltage with a simple discharging cable. An electronic system monitors the process and shuts it down automatically when the recommended voltage is reached.

UNCOMPROMISING FOR COMPETITION

With the LS8-e neo contest preparation is easy: Take advantage of its simple propulsion system!

If you need the uncompromising aerodynamic design of an LS8-neo for a competition just disassemble the propeller blades and remove the batteries. With a simple shaped piece you can easily convert your LS8-e neo into an LS8-sc neo and there are no more propeller blades that might disturb the airflow around its fuselage nose.

ALLROUNDER FOR CLUBS

Thanks to easy handling features, harmonic flight qualities and different wing span options between 15 and 18 meters our LS8-e neo is the optimal addition to a club’s glider fleet. Recreational pilots, competitive pilots or cross country newbees, you may all take advantage of the LS8-e neo. Simply adapt it to your individual requirements. Such a sailplane serves many different purposes and may thus be used by a large number of pilots.
