DG-808C Competition – Liberty in the 18m Class

For many years our DG-808C Competition has set the pattern for self-launching sailplanes. The sailplanes of the DG-800 series are the world’s most produced auxiliary powered 18m ships. Our DG-808C Competition is the latest version of all self-launching DG-800S. In its design decades of experience in the construction of self-launching sailplanes are accumulated.

Propulsion

Triebwerk DG-808C CompetitionA SOLO 2625 engine powers the DG-808C Competition. This water-cooled propulsion unit was especially developed to be used in single seated self-launchers. It stands out with its little weight, its compact assembly dimension, double ignition, and a high durability. The engine reaches its high output of 40 kW (54 PS) already at 6000 rpm. With the tooth belt’s reduction gear ratio of 3:1 the propeller rotates at only 2000 rpm. Its low revolution speed thus produces little noise emission. While the propulsion unit is running, engine and the big muffler stay inside the fuselage. Another noise reducing factor.
All those parts that need to be serviced from time to time can be accessed while the
propeller is extended. The propulsion unit remains inside the fuselage during service and maintenance. This keeps the costs down.

 

Engine Handling

Our DEI-NT (Digital Engine Indicator – New Technology) is still state of the art when talking about automatically controlled extension or retraction of sailplane propulsion units. The graphic display provides all the information necessary for engine use and while gliding. The pilot will receive important warnings about the engine operation immediately. With the DEI-NT system DG is the only manufacturer who offers an off-the-shelf stall warning for powered gliders.

Wings

The airfoil for our DG-808C was developed by L. Boermans (Delft University of Technology). It is outlined and optimized for an 18m wingspan. We also have an optional set of winglets available, which positively influence the ship’s gliding and climbing performance. Furthermore we can offer winglets for the 15m version which convert your 808C Competition into a nice glider for the 15 meter class. A bug wiper garage hidden close to the wing fuselage intersection (optional) keeps the wiper under the surface. A neat solution to obtain excellent aerodynamic conditions.

 

Visibility

DG-808C CockpitThanks to its huge canopy you will enjoy an outstanding visibility in the DG-808C Competition. A great contribution to flight safety. What’s more your feet will always stay warm as the sun may heat them up unhampered – even while it’s cold outside.

Cockpit

image3The DG-808C’s fuselage has an immense energy absorption capacity. The structure is a carbon aramid fiber hybrid construction. Even while the outer shell may break in a crash-landing the continuous inner shell still protects the pilot from injuries. Comparing it to other safety cockpits of the last generation you will find out that we reinforced the cockpit’s upper rim with carbon fiber strings and added further elements to strengthen the construction. We also optimized the position of the safety belts to prevent the pilot from sliding forwards.

 

DG-808C RückenlehneThe adjustable backrest has an integrated head cushion. The canopy jettison which is combined with a Roeger Hook has been optimized. You simply have to operate one handle and the canopy will securely be separated from the fuselage. First-class fabric combined with black artificial-leather underline the modern cockpit interior. If you prefer we can offer to manufacture an individually designed precious leather trim.

 

image1The instrument panel has continuously been upgraded over the years, so you can clearly arrange large board computers in it. You may as well order your instrument panel in carbon or burl wood optic. Tall pilots are invited to take advantage of our special outfit offer. Our tallest customer measures a stately 2.05 meters.

 

Liberty

Due to its light wings you can easily rig or de-rig the sailplane with a one man rigging device. Thanks to its steerable tail wheel, a big main wheel and wingtip-wheels the DG-808C Competition is well maneuverable on the ground. Even on soft soils there is no help needed. You can always launch independently, and after a short while you’ll never want to miss that kind of freedom. The fuselage tank carries 21l and thus offers a big range for powered flight. Refueling is comfortable: The tank can be filled from a canister with the aid of a built-in fuel pump. A small switch will automatically turn it off when the tank is filled. No spilling over.

 

tanken-direkt-in-dg-808The DG-808C Competition is additionally and as standard equipped with a filler neck, so you can refill your motor glider directly from the airfield’s gas pump. A nice advantage when you plan to travel with your sailplane! The built in battery system is with its 20 Ah well dimensioned. If needed, an additional battery may be placed in the luggage compartment.

Safety Features

Besides the above quoted safety cockpit the DG-808C Competition provides a number of additional important safety aspects:

  • The strong engine allows for short take off runs and big climb rates. This is particularly important on airfields at higher altitudes and on short runways. With the automatic engine control of DG’s motor gliders, handling and observing the running power unit is quite uncomplicated, even for less experienced pilots.
  • Cockpit with energy absorbing fuselage shell built in carbon-, aramid- fiber hybrid construction with a continuous inner shell; safety cockpit corresponding to the results of the latest research by TÜV Rheinland.
  • All control elements (including engine controls) are operated with the left hand. The right hand may consequently stay on the stick during all maneuvers.
  • Automatic connections for all controls, also for dumping water ballast.
  • Excellent visibility thanks to a large one-piece canopy.
  • Very effective two-bladed air brakes and wheel brake.
  • Well-sprung landing gear with big 5.00-5 wheel.
  • The landing gear is operated with the left hand; the right one is always in command of the stick.
  • Piggott hook to impede an unintended opening of air brakes.
  • Röger hook for safe canopy jettison.
